Tools

The main tools we use when trail building are Spades, Mattocks, Wheelbarrows and McLoeds. There's more information on tools at American Trails.

McLoeds

Trailbuilding Tools McLoedsPronounced "McCloud". A specialist trail-building tool that isn't often seen in the UK, a bit like a double-sided rake on steroids. The serrated edge is used for dragging leaves and branches off the trail , while the flat edge is sharp and can cut through dirt and small roots. McLoeds are mostly used for shaping the trail surface, and packing down dirt or stone. There's more information on tools at American Trails.

Barrows

tRAIL bUILDING tOOLS wHEELbARROWWhen we're building we use wheelbarrows to move pretty much all our materials. A couple of tips for using barrows - don't overfill them, (especially on a wet and slippery day), check that the barrow is stable before starting to fill it, and when you're pushing one try and keep your arms low to stop the metal loop at the front smacking into rocks and roots.

Mattocks

Trail Building Tools MattockA mattock is like a heavy-duty pickaxe with a wide digging blade on one side and and a narrow chopping blade on the other. If you're struggling to dig in rocky or rooty ground you definitely need to get your hands on a mattock. When you're using a mattock don't swing it over your head, it's dangerous and you'll get tired really quickly. Swing from a couple of feet up and let the weight of the tool do the work.

Spades & Shovels

Trailbuilding Tools SpadeShovels come in a few different shapes. The pointy ones are good for shovelling larger stone, as they can get between the cracks.
