South Bristol pump track - UPDATE

The South Bristol pump track project is going ahead, and as of today the council are inviting professional track builders to tender. Whoever gets the contract is going to work with the local biking community to design the track and build it. So it looks like it's going to have rider input from start to finish, but also be overseen by an experienced professional. Sounds good to us.

Closing date for applications is the end of September so there'll be another update then.

Big thanks to everyone who's helped get the project to this stage with their ideas and enthusiasm, especailly Taff Frewin.

Kona Oktoberfest

Kona Oktoberfest

There are still entries available for the Kona Oktoberfest, an 8-hour endurance event organised by the same team behind Bristol Bikefest. The race is on Saturday 16 October, and there's also a 4-hour option for any soloists, novices or pot hunters.

The race will feature a similar course and format to the Bikefest but the organisers have promised some extra surprises, a "comfort station" to warm up any racers feeling the autumnal chill, and a Bavarian feel.

Balloon Fiesta this weekend

The Balloon Fiesta is taking place at Ashton Court this weekend, starting today. Although the trails will still be open, the Suspension Bridge will be shut, vehicle access will be restricted and there's going to be a hefty charge to park at the estate.

If you're planning on riding this weekend, either get to the trails by bike, or check out another spot such as Leigh Woods - although it might be a bit mushy after the recent rain!

South Bristol Pump Track

pump track location

There are plans afoot to build two pump and jump tracks in inner city Bristol. Bristol City Council have earmarked two potential locations, Eastville Park and under the Brunel Way flyover in the Cumberland Basin (pictured above).

A small budget has been sourced for both locations and the contract to create the tracks is going to be put out to tender. However before this happens the council want to hear from potential users of the track what sort of facility they want. Should they build something that's made for big wheels, or more suited to BMXes? A pure pump track or a set of jumps as well?

You can add your views below, or via a Facebook group that's been set up specially.

Bristol Bikefest wrap-up

Bike Fest

Bristol Bikefest is over for another year, and yet again it was a cracking weekend of tough but friendly racing.

It's always a bit nerve-wracking when you put lots of extra preparation into a trail day. So it's a relief to say that our fifth annual summer trail day and barbecue was well attended by the usual mix of old and new faces, the trails got a proper sprucing, and the mountain of food that we bought was nearly all consumed. Thanks to our sponsors (particularly Bristol Bike Fest, Kona/Torq and Psyclewerx) and all the volunteers. See you next year!

Dig and Pig, tomorrow!

Dig and Pig

Preparations are nearly complete for tomorrow's Dig and Pig, our most ambitious trail day of the year!

We'll be fixing at least three sections of trail, laying on food for the builders, including sandwiches for lunch and a BBQ after digging finishes, and there will be a draw for some ace prizes including event entries and riding gear.

We'll be out from 10.00 am to late afternoon, and you're welcome to come along for all or part of the day. See here for more details.

Paul Hobbs photo evening 2

Our second photo evening with Paul Hobbs is set for Wednesday 12 May, with a slightly later start time of 6.30 pm.

Our photo evening goes off!

A real mixed bag of riders attended our first photo evening with Paul Hobbs, but they all got some great riding shots in exchange for a donation to the trails group's funds.

Photos from Saturday's trail day

A few pictures from today's trail day at Ashton Court. Around 15 hardy volunteers braved the rain to give a new lease of life to the Lower Quarry Trail.
