Home Trail Building About Trail Days

When do they happen?

Trail days are currently happening monthly in 50 Acre Wood. In the past we've done lots of work in Ashton Court, but with the trail scheduled for a major facelift next year, work there has been wound down for now.

The best way of getting reliable notification of when a trail day is happening is to sign up as a member on our forum, check the front page of the website, or join our Facebook group.

What do you do?

Ideally, a mix of boring stuff (trail repairs and maintenance) and fun stuff (building trail features and new sections). Keeping the trails in good riding condition takes priority but if there's an opportunity to add new features and build something fun then we'll do this too.

Can I bring the Kids

Trail days involve a variety of work - it's not all barrowing rocks -  so there's usually something for older children to do. Most of the work we do isn't suitable for smaller children, but if you're happy for them to play nearby while you work then by all means bring them along. Children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult and shouldn't used sharp-edged tools like saws or mattocks. If you're under 18 and want to come along to a trail building session, make sure you get your parent's permission.

Where do you meet?

It depends where we're working, but check the Maps section of the website for the locations of the usual meeting points.

How long do they last?

Trail days generally start at 11.00 am in summer, and 10.00 am in the winter to give us more daylight time. We normally stay out until 4.00 or 5.00 pm, but you can arrive or depart when you want. When we announce a trail day we'll usually say where we're working, or give out a dig leader's mobile number so you can meet up with us easily.

Do you cancel dig days in bad weather?

If it's raining or cold we'll still be out digging. The places we work are sheltered and wet conditions can even help to identify problem areas that need fixing. If a trail day has to be cancelled for another reason, we'll try and give you as much notice as possible.

Where can I park?

For trail days in Ashton Court, the best places to park are probably the Golf Course car park (if we're working on the side nearest the city) or the Longwood Lane entrance (if we're working on the far side). If you park at the Longwood Lane entrance, don't park in the layby near the quarry gates, as this is a clearway and you could get a ticket. Give the trail leader a ring and he'll let you in the gate so you can park inside the estate.

For trail days in 50 Acre Wood, the best place to park is probably the tarmac area near the entrance to Cotham Park rugby club (at the top of the rocky bridleway). If we're working on the far side of the wood, there is enough space for a couple of cars to park by the top layby on Weir Lane.

What should I bring?

Wear sensible footwear such as work boots or walking boots. These will help protect your feet and give grip on muddy patches. Long trousers are recommended (some sections of trail are quite thorny).

We supply tools, materials and work gloves but if you prefer you can bring your own gloves or spade.

We don't normally provide volunteers with food or drink so bring water, and food too if you're planning to stay out all day.

If you're arriving by bike, a lock will save you having to keep an eye on it.
